The coin that created the bullion-coin market

Before 1967, private buyers who wanted gold by weight mostly had to buy bars or old circulating coins. South Africa, then the world's largest gold producer, launched the Krugerrand to change that: a coin containing exactly one troy ounce of gold, sold at a small premium over its metal value, and given legal-tender status so it could be exported freely as a coin.

The name joins Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic in the late 19th century, whose portrait is on the obverse, with the rand, the national currency. The reverse shows a springbok antelope, designed by Coert Steynberg. The coin has no face value. Its legal-tender status is tied to its gold content, which was a novel idea in 1967.

It was an enormous success. By the late 1970s the Krugerrand accounted for the large majority of the world's gold-coin market, and its popularity prompted other countries to issue their own bullion coins: Canada's Maple Leaf in 1979, the American Eagle in 1986, and many more.

Sanctions. In the 1980s, opposition to apartheid led many countries to restrict Krugerrand imports. In the US, imports were barred in 1985 and the ban was written into the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986. The restrictions were lifted in the early 1990s as apartheid ended. Krugerrands bought before and after that era circulate freely today.

Why it's 22 karat, and why it looks different

The Krugerrand is 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. The Gold Eagle's alloy includes silver, but the Krugerrand uses copper alone, which gives it a distinctly orange-gold color. Newcomers sometimes mistake that for a sign of low quality. It's simply the copper.

The hard alloy was chosen for durability. Krugerrands were meant to be handled, traded and stored in tubes, and they resist scratches and dents far better than pure-gold coins.

Fractional, proof and privy-mark Krugerrands

Fractional sizes (½, ¼ and ⅒ oz) were added in 1980 to reach buyers who couldn't afford a full ounce. They follow the same 22k alloy and design.

Proofs have been struck for collectors since the first year, with mirror fields and frosted designs, and they sell as collectibles.

Privy marks. For the coin's 50th anniversary in 2017, the Mint added a small springbok privy mark to a limited "premium" range. Privy-marked and anniversary Krugerrands have continued since and usually carry higher premiums than standard bullion coins.

Other metals. Since 2017 the Krugerrand design has also appeared on silver and, from 2018, platinum coins. They're not gold, so check the metal before you look up a value.

How to identify a genuine Krugerrand

  • Weight and size: 33.93 g, 32.77 mm across, 2.84 mm thick, for the one-ounce coin.
  • Edge: 180 serrations (reeds) around the edge of the one-ounce coin.
  • Color: noticeably more orange than pure gold. A bright yellow "Krugerrand" deserves a second look.
  • Details: Kruger's portrait, the springbok, the date, and the inscription "FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD".
  • Ring and magnet tests: a clear ring and no magnetic attraction. Neither is proof on its own.

Because the Krugerrand was the first and most widely held bullion coin, it's also one of the most counterfeited. Buy from established dealers and verify any coin offered far below spot.

Melt value vs premium

Buying. Krugerrands are often among the lowest-premium one-ounce gold coins available, because large numbers trade on the secondary market and there's no collector surcharge on common dates.

Selling. Dealers worldwide recognize and buy them readily, usually close to spot.

Retirement accounts: not eligible. US tax rules require IRA gold to be at least .995 fine, with a specific exception for American Gold Eagles. The Krugerrand is 22 karat and doesn't qualify, so it can't be held in a US precious-metals IRA. If an IRA is your goal, see how to buy gold bullion.

Proof and early dates. Proof Krugerrands and very early dates can carry collector value. The 1967 first year had a small mintage. Have those assessed before selling at melt.

Selling Krugerrands?

The figure above is melt value, which is the ceiling, not an offer, for bullion Krugerrands. Common-date one-ounce coins in good condition usually sell near it; proofs and early dates may be worth more. Get more than one bid.

FAQ

How much is a Krugerrand worth today?

$4,291.00 in gold content as of September 23, 2026, for the one-ounce coin.

Is a Krugerrand pure gold?

No. It's 22 karat (91.67% gold, 8.33% copper), but it contains a full troy ounce of gold.

Can I buy Krugerrands in the US?

Yes. The import ban from the apartheid era was lifted in the early 1990s, and Krugerrands are widely sold by US dealers.

Why doesn't a Krugerrand have a face value?

It was designed so that its legal-tender status rests on its gold content rather than a denomination.

Are Krugerrands IRA-eligible?

No. They don't meet the purity requirement for US precious-metals IRAs.

Why is my Krugerrand orange?

The copper in its 22k alloy gives it that warmer, orange-gold color. It's normal, not a sign of a fake.
