Quick answer: One kilogram of pure gold is worth $137,959 at the spot price as of September 23, 2026. A kilogram is 32.1507 troy ounces, so the per-kilo price is the ounce price ($4,291.00) × 32.15. A standard kilo bar is .9999 fine, so its melt value is within a few dollars of that figure.

The kilo bar: the world's working unit of gold

If the troy ounce is gold's accounting unit in New York and London, the kilogram is its trading unit almost everywhere else.

Asia runs on kilos. The Shanghai Gold Exchange, the world's largest physical gold exchange, lists its benchmark contract as a one-kilogram bar of 99.99% gold. Hong Kong's market trades kilo bars and the traditional tael. India, one of the two largest consumer markets, imports and trades gold by the kilo, alongside the traditional 10-tola bar (about 116.6 grams), which is also popular across the Gulf. Swiss refiners, who process a large share of the world's gold, turn London's 400-ounce bars into kilo bars in huge volumes for exactly this demand.

Kilo bars are a meeting point. A 400-ounce Good Delivery bar weighs about 12.4 kg. That's too large and too valuable for anyone but banks and central banks. One-ounce products are too small for serious wholesale trade. The kilo bar sits in between: large enough to carry a thin premium, small enough for a jeweler, a dealer or a wealthy private buyer to handle, and it slots neatly into metric accounting.

The kilo ties the metric world to the troy world. Because one kilogram is 32.1507 troy ounces, a kilo bar is effectively a "32-ounce bar," and the conversion between Asian and Western quotes is a single multiplication. That's why the per-kilo price moves exactly in step with the per-ounce price: it's the same number scaled by 32.15.

Kilo bars vs 10-ounce vs 1-ounce: where the premium goes

Every gold product costs spot plus a premium, and the premium per ounce shrinks as the piece gets larger. A kilo bar holds 32 ounces of gold but needs roughly the same assay, stamping and packaging work as a one-ounce bar, so that fixed cost is spread 32 times thinner.

The rough pattern, from highest to lowest premium per ounce of gold:

  1. Gram bars and fractional coins: highest, often by a wide margin
  2. One-ounce coins: moderate, and the easiest to sell
  3. One-ounce bars: a little lower than coins
  4. Ten-ounce bars: lower again
  5. Kilo bars: among the lowest available to private buyers

The trade-off is divisibility. At today's price a kilo bar is $137,959 in one piece. If you ever need a fraction of that value, you have to sell the whole bar. Resale can also take a little longer, because some buyers want to re-assay large bars. That concern is smaller for bars from LBMA-accredited refiners in intact, serialized packaging.

A common middle path is to hold most of the weight in larger bars and some in one-ounce coins as the spendable part. See gold bar prices by size for the full size ladder at live melt values.

Buying or selling a kilo bar in practice

A kilo bar is a large transaction, and it comes with some practicalities that smaller purchases don't.

Payment. Dealers generally want a bank wire for purchases of this size. Card payments, where they're accepted at all, usually carry a surcharge. Expect the price to be locked when you confirm and payment to be due within a day or two.

Reporting. In the US, a dealer who buys gold bars from a customer generally has to report the sale to the IRS on Form 1099-B when the bars total a kilogram or more at .995 purity or better, which a single kilo bar meets. Separately, any dealer that receives more than $10,000 in cash in a transaction must file Form 8300. This is routine paperwork, not a red flag, and a dealer who offers to skip it is one to avoid.

Shipping and storage. Insured, signature-required shipping is standard. Many kilo-bar owners use a professional depository instead of home storage, because the value is concentrated in one small object.

Re-assay. Some buyers want to test an unbranded or unsealed bar before paying full value. Keep the bar's assay certificate and the refiner's serial number together.

Worked examples

1. One kilo bar, .9999 fine. 1,000 g × 99.99% = 999.9 g of gold = 32.148 troy ounces, worth $137,945 at spot.

2. A quarter-kilo (250 g) of 22k jewelry. 250 g × 91.67% = 229.2 g of gold, worth $31,615.57. The quantity is typical of a family's bridal gold in South Asia, and the calculation is the same.

3. How many kilos is a Good Delivery bar?

A 400-ounce bar is 400 ÷ 32.1507 = 12.44 kg, worth about $1,716,400 at today's spot price. You won't be buying one, but it shows the scale the spot price is set at.

FAQ

How many ounces are in a kilo of gold?

32.1507 troy ounces. In regular (avoirdupois) ounces a kilo is 35.27, but gold is never priced that way.

How much is a kilo gold bar worth?

About $137,959 in gold at today's spot price. A dealer's selling price will be that plus a premium, which for kilo bars is among the lowest per ounce of any product.

How big is a kilo gold bar?

Smaller than most people expect, about the size of a smartphone, because gold is very dense. Exact dimensions vary by refiner and by whether the bar is cast or minted.

Why do Asian markets use kilos instead of ounces?

They trade in metric units and serve jewelry and wholesale buyers who need sizable, standardized bars. The Shanghai Gold Exchange's benchmark contract is a one-kilo bar.

Is the kilo price for pure gold?

Yes, for 24k. For lower karats, multiply by the gold fraction: 22k is 91.67% and 18k is 75%.
