999 vs 9999: what "pure" actually means
"24 karat" means all 24 parts are gold, but no real-world gold is perfectly pure. What matters is how close it gets, expressed as fineness in parts per thousand:

For value, the difference is tiny. Going from 999 to 9999 adds just 0.09% more gold per gram, a difference that only matters at large weights. Most buyers pay on 999 unless an item is a recognized 9999 bullion product.
For marketing, it can matter more. Refiners compete on purity, and "9999" has become the expected standard for bullion. Be wary of any jewelry advertised as "24k" without a fineness mark or an assay. Some pieces sold abroad as pure gold assay well below 999.
24k jewelry: where people wear pure gold
Pure gold is too soft for most Western jewelry. It bends, scratches and wears quickly, and it can't grip a gemstone securely. But in parts of Asia, 24k jewelry is a mainstream product:
China and Hong Kong. Pure-gold jewelry is a long-standing tradition. It's sold in thick, simple chains, bangles, pendants and zodiac charms, and priced by weight close to the daily gold price. Chinese labeling has its own terms. 足金 ("zu jin", full gold) means at least 99.0% gold, and 千足金 ("qian zu jin") means at least 99.9%. Some Chinese retailers and Hong Kong jewelers also use the traditional name chuk kam for pure gold.
"Hard" 24k. Since the 2010s, manufacturers in China and Hong Kong have used new processing methods to make pure gold harder without lowering its purity meaningfully. These "hard gold" or "5G gold" pieces can be thin and intricate while still marked as 999. The label is legitimate, but always check the fineness mark rather than the marketing name.
Thailand, Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Local standards differ. Thai gold jewelry is commonly around 96.5% gold, sold by the baht weight (about 15.2 grams), so not all "pure" Asian gold is 24k.
In the West, 24k appears mostly in bullion: bars, the Canadian Maple Leaf, the American Buffalo, and gold leaf used for decoration and gilding.
Selling pure gold
Selling 24k is the simplest gold sale there is, because there's no alloy to account for. Buyers still deduct a margin, but offers on 24k typically come closer to spot than on jewelry-karat gold, especially for recognized bullion products in original packaging.

Checking pure gold at home: the density test
Acid tests are less useful on 24k because nothing is "above" pure gold to test for. Fakes are usually plated tungsten or other dense metals. Density is a better home check for bars and coins:
- Weigh the item in grams on an accurate scale.
- Suspend it on a thread in a cup of water sitting on the scale, without touching the sides or bottom. The increase in the reading equals the volume of water displaced, in cubic centimeters.
- Divide the weight by that volume. Pure gold is about 19.3 g/cm³. 22k coin alloy is lower, about 17.8.
A result far below the expected density suggests a base-metal core. Tungsten is the hard case, because its density (about 19.25) is almost identical to gold's. That's why dealers also use ultrasonic or electromagnetic testers on large bars. For small items the scale's precision limits the test, so treat it as a screen, not proof.
