Why most American jewelry is 14k

Walk into almost any US jewelry store and most of the gold in the cases will be 14 karat. The karat wins on a balance of three things buyers care about.

Color. At 58% gold, 14k has a warm, clearly "gold" yellow, much richer than 10k and close enough to 18k that most people can't tell them apart at a glance.

Durability. The 42% alloy makes it hard enough for rings worn every day, prong settings that hold diamonds, and chains that get tugged. Engagement rings and wedding bands, the pieces people wear for decades, are overwhelmingly 14k in the US.

Price. Gold content drives cost. 14k gives most of 18k's look for roughly 22% less gold per gram, and at today's prices that's a meaningful saving on any sizable piece.

The same balance made 14k (sold as 585) a mainstream standard across much of Central and Eastern Europe and Russia, where it's often the dominant jewelry alloy. So 14k resells easily almost anywhere.

The 585 hallmark, and the 583 question

Here's a detail that confuses sellers and that most price sites skip.

Mathematically, 14 karat is 14 ÷ 24 = 58.33% gold, or 583 parts per thousand. But the international millesimal hallmark for 14k is 585, not 583. Jewelry made to that standard, which includes most European and much imported jewelry, is manufactured to contain at least 58.5% gold. It's a slightly higher bar than the arithmetic suggests.

US practice differs in the other direction. American law ties a karat mark to the stated fineness with a small allowed tolerance, and solder in a finished piece can pull the average slightly lower. Older US-made pieces, especially, may assay a little under 58.3%.

What this means when you sell. Most gold buyers and refiners price 14k at .583 (some use a rounded .58 or .585, some use their own assay results). The difference between .583 and .585 is about a third of a percent, which is small on a ring and noticeable on a large lot. For large lots, ask the buyer which fineness they're paying on, or whether they'll settle on an actual assay.

Other marks you may see: 14K, 14KT, 14KP ("plumb", an old US marketing term claiming the piece meets 14k fully without tolerance), and 585. As with any karat, 14K GF (gold-filled) and 14K GP or HGE (plated) are not solid 14k and are worth far less.

Testing, colors and what changes the value

14k comes in three colors, all with the same gold content:

  • Yellow 14k: gold with silver and copper.
  • White 14k: gold alloyed with white metals (nickel or palladium), usually plated with rhodium for a bright white finish. The plating wears and can be redone. It doesn't change the gold value.
  • Rose 14k: extra copper for a pink tone.

Color doesn't change melt value. A gram of white 14k and a gram of yellow 14k contain the same gold.

Testing. A buyer will usually scratch-test a piece on a touchstone and apply 14k acid, or scan it with an XRF analyzer. If a piece stamped 14k fails, it may be plated, or stamped to a foreign standard that the buyer's test reads differently. Ask to see the result.

What reduces the gold weight: diamonds and gemstones (weigh them out), steel clasp springs, hollow construction, and solder-heavy repairs. A jeweler can unset stones before you sell if they're worth keeping.

The middle column is why 14k is what most US sellers bring in. It's the karat of the rings, chains and earrings bought over the last several decades.

Worked examples

1. A 14k wedding band weighing 5 grams. 5 g × 58.33% = 2.92 g of gold, worth $402.38.

2. A 14k curb chain weighing 12 grams. 12 g × 58.33% = 7.0 g of gold, worth $965.71.

3. An 18-gram 14k bracelet, priced on .583 vs .585. At .583 the gold is worth $1,448.57. At .585 it's $1,452.71. The difference is $4.14. That's small, but it's worth knowing which figure an offer is based on.

Selling 14k gold?

These figures are melt value, which is the ceiling, not an offer. Refiners and mail-in buyers typically pay a percentage of melt, local shops less, and pawn shops less still. Ask for the price per pennyweight and the karat they tested at.

FAQ

How much is 14k gold worth per gram today?

$80.48 in gold content as of September 23, 2026, calculated at 58.33% of the pure-gold price of $137.96 per gram.

Is 585 gold the same as 14k?

Yes. 585 is the millesimal (parts per thousand) mark for 14-karat gold, made to at least 58.5% gold.

Is 14k or 18k better?

It depends what you want. 14k is harder and cheaper, while 18k is richer in color and holds more gold per gram. For everyday rings, many jewelers recommend 14k.

How much is a 14k gold chain worth?

Weigh it in grams, and multiply by $80.48 for its gold value. A 20-gram 14k chain holds $1,609.52 of gold at today's price. Expect offers below that.

Why did a buyer pay me less than the 14k price?

Buyers deduct for testing, refining and margin, so offers run below melt value. Typical ranges are shown in the box above. Also check that they tested and priced it as 14k, not 10k.
