The troy ounce: why gold isn't weighed like groceries
The ounce in "gold price per ounce" is always the troy ounce, a unit that survives almost nowhere except precious metals. It weighs 31.1034768 grams. The ounce on a kitchen or postal scale, the avoirdupois ounce, weighs 28.3495 grams. The troy ounce is the heavier of the two by about 9.7%.
The name is usually traced to Troyes, a market town in Champagne whose medieval trade fairs drew merchants from across Europe and needed a weight standard everyone would accept. English mints and goldsmiths adopted troy weights for bullion in the late Middle Ages. When the United States set up its own Mint, it defined its coinage standard with a troy pound as well. Everyday commerce eventually moved to avoirdupois and then, in most of the world, to metric. Precious metals never switched, because every contract, vault record and price history was already written in troy ounces. Changing the unit would have meant restating centuries of records.
Two traps follow from this.
The kitchen-scale trap. Weigh a gold item on an ordinary scale that reads in ounces, multiply by the spot price, and you'll overstate its value by nearly a tenth. For gold that is a lot of money. Always convert to grams first, or use a scale that reads in troy ounces or pennyweights.
The pound trap. A troy pound is only 12 troy ounces, while an avoirdupois pound is about 14.6 troy ounces. Gold is almost never quoted per pound, but if you meet the word, ask which pound is meant.
How the per-ounce gold price is actually set
No committee announces the gold price. It comes out of continuous trading in a few big markets, and the number you see depends on which of them you're looking at.
COMEX futures (New York). The most-watched gold price in the US comes from COMEX gold futures, which trade in contracts of 100 troy ounces on CME Group's electronic platform almost 24 hours a day on weekdays. Because futures trade so heavily, they lead price discovery during US hours. Our chart is built from their daily closes.
The London market. London is the world's largest wholesale gold market. It trades bars that meet the LBMA Good Delivery standard, each weighing roughly 400 troy ounces (anywhere from about 350 to 430) at a purity of at least 99.5%. That's the gold held in central-bank and institutional vaults.
The LBMA Gold Price. Twice every London business day, at 10:30 and 15:00, an electronic auction run by ICE Benchmark Administration sets the LBMA Gold Price. It replaced the old London Gold Fixing, which began in 1919 and ended in 2015. Contracts, central banks and some funds use it as their reference, so it's the closest thing gold has to an official price, but it's still a snapshot of two moments a day.
Spot. A "spot" quote, like the one at the top of this page, is the price for immediate settlement, derived from all of the above as they trade. Spot and near-month futures usually sit close together, and the small gap between them is explained on our homepage under "Why Gold Quotes Disagree".
The practical point: a per-ounce price is only meaningful with a timestamp. Gold can move more in an hour than the difference between any two reputable sources. That's why this page shows when its figure was captured, and why you should check the time on any quote you compare it to.
Worked examples
The spot price applies to pure gold by the troy ounce. Here's how it scales:
1. A one-ounce bullion coin. An American Gold Eagle or Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of gold, so its melt value is simply $4,291.00. The coin weighs more than an ounce because it's 22 karat, and the extra weight is copper and silver alloy. Dealers sell it for spot plus a premium. See American Gold Eagle value.
2. A ten-ounce bar. 10 × $4,291.00 = $42,910 in gold content. Larger bars carry a lower premium per ounce, which is why people buying for weight often choose the ten-ounce size.
3. Two ounces weighed on a kitchen scale. Suppose an item reads 2.0 oz on a kitchen scale. That's 56.7 grams, which is 1.82 troy ounces, not 2. At today's price, the kitchen-scale reading would overstate a pure-gold item's value by about $759.87. If the item is 14k rather than pure, multiply the result by 0.583 as well. The gold melt value calculator handles both steps.

FAQ
How many grams are in an ounce of gold?
31.1035 grams in a troy ounce, which is the unit gold is priced in. A regular (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.35 grams.
Is the gold price per ounce for pure gold?
Yes. The spot price per ounce assumes 24-karat, essentially pure gold. For jewelry, multiply by the karat fraction: 14k is 58.3% gold and 18k is 75%.
Why does the price per ounce change so often?
Gold trades nearly continuously on weekdays across Asian, European and US hours, so the price updates whenever a trade happens. Our figure updates about once a minute while this page is open and always shows its timestamp.
What is a "fractional" ounce?
A coin or bar containing a set fraction of a troy ounce, such as a half, quarter or tenth. They're convenient but cost more per ounce of gold than full-ounce pieces.
What was the highest gold price per ounce ever?
See gold price all-time high, which is calculated from our price history rather than typed in, so it updates when a new record is set.
