Where 22k gold is the standard
For most American shoppers, 22k is unusual. For hundreds of millions of jewelry buyers across South Asia and the Gulf, it's simply "gold".
India and South Asia. Indian gold jewelry, from wedding sets to everyday bangles, is overwhelmingly 22 karat. Gold carries deep cultural weight at weddings and festivals, and jewelry doubles as family savings. It's bought by weight, kept for generations, and often exchanged for new pieces rather than sold. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka follow similar traditions.
The Gulf and Middle East. In the gold souks of Dubai and across the region, 21k and 22k dominate, with 18k as the lighter, more Western option.
Diaspora jewelers in the US, UK and Canada serve the same market, so 22k is widely available in cities with large South Asian and Middle Eastern communities.
Bullion coins. The American Gold Eagle and the South African Krugerrand are both 22 karat. Their makers chose it, following older gold-coin tradition, because the alloy survives handling far better than pure gold. Each coin still contains exactly one troy ounce of gold. The extra weight is the alloy. See American Gold Eagle value and Krugerrand value.
This older coinage standard, sometimes called crown gold, goes back to 16th-century English coins. The British sovereign is still struck in 22k today.
The 916 mark, and India's hallmarking system
Marks. 22k is stamped 22K, 916, or both (often "22K916"). The number means 916 parts gold per thousand, a rounding of 91.67%. You'll also see KDM on older Indian jewelry. It refers to the cadmium-based solder once used to make joints without lowering the purity. Cadmium's health risks led to it being phased out, and KDM isn't a purity guarantee.
India's mandatory hallmark. Since 2021, most gold jewelry sold in India must be hallmarked under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) system. A compliant piece carries three marks: the BIS logo, the purity grade (such as 22K916), and a unique six-character HUID code that identifies that specific piece. For anyone holding Indian jewelry, the HUID makes purity much easier to verify, and it also helps when selling.
Softness and settings. At 91.67% gold, 22k is soft. It's ideal for heavy, sculpted bangles, chains and filigree, but less suited to holding precious stones securely, which is why stone-set pieces are more often 18k. Soft metal also wears slowly with daily use, so older pieces can weigh a little less than when they were made.
Selling 22k gold: what's different
- Your gold is worth more per gram than typical US jewelry. 22k holds about 57% more gold per gram than 14k, so offers based on "gold price per gram" from US buyers used to 14k need checking against the 22k figure.
- Buyers may test for purity more carefully, because older, non-hallmarked 22k can assay a little lower than its mark. A hallmarked piece with a HUID code is easier to price fairly.
- Specialist buyers can pay better. Jewelers who serve South Asian customers often buy back 22k at competitive rates, because they can resell or remake it for customers who want that karat.
- Making charges aren't recoverable. The labor cost paid when the jewelry was bought, often a significant share of the price, doesn't come back when you sell by weight.
Why 22k prices in India differ from the spot conversion
If you compare the per-gram figure on this page with a jeweler's board rate in India, the Indian price will usually be higher. The spot price is a wholesale, duty-free, dollar figure. Retail gold in India adds import duty, GST, the rupee exchange rate on the day, and, for jewelry, a making charge for the craftsmanship. Our figure is the gold content at the international price, which is the right number for judging melt value anywhere, but not the price tag in a Mumbai showroom.
Worked examples
1. A 20-gram 22k bangle. 20 g × 91.67% = 18.33 g of gold, worth $2,529.25.
2. A 50-gram 22k wedding necklace set. 50 g × 91.67% = 45.8 g of gold, worth $6,323.11. Subtract any stones, beads or thread first.
3. One tola (11.66 g) of 22k. Tola weights are still common in South Asian trade. One tola of 22k holds 10.69 g of gold, worth $1,475.03.

These figures are melt value, which is the ceiling, not an offer. Refiners and mail-in buyers typically pay a percentage of melt, local shops less, and pawn shops less still. Ask for the price per gram and the karat they tested at.
