Why the gram is the unit that matters for most people
Bullion dealers and futures traders think in troy ounces. Nearly everyone else who touches gold thinks in grams. There are three reasons.
Jewelry is small. A wedding band weighs 3–6 grams, a typical chain 5–25 grams, and a pair of stud earrings under 2 grams. At those sizes, ounces would mean quoting prices like "0.13 oz". Grams give whole numbers people can read.
Most of the world is metric. Gold jewelry is sold by the gram across India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and most of Europe, and the major Asian exchanges price gold by the gram or kilogram. A US jeweler buying from international suppliers usually works in grams too. The US scrap trade adds pennyweights to the mix, as a unit of its own. See gold price per pennyweight.
Scales read in grams. An inexpensive digital scale accurate to 0.01 g is enough to weigh jewelry properly, and it reads in grams by default. A per-gram price lets you multiply straight from the display, without converting through ounces and risking the troy-versus-kitchen mistake explained on our gold price per ounce page.
So the per-gram price is a translation of the ounce price into the unit people actually weigh with. It adds no new information, but it removes a step where mistakes happen.
The small-lot penalty: why a gram of gold costs more than a gram of gold
At spot, every gram of pure gold is worth the same $137.96. At retail it isn't. The smaller the piece you buy, the more you pay per gram.
A one-gram gold bar is a real product, often sold in a credit-card-sized assay card. Producing it takes almost the same work as a much larger bar: refining, stamping, assaying, packaging, serializing, and shipping. That fixed cost is spread over a single gram instead of 31 or 1,000, so its premium, as a percentage of the gold inside, is many times larger than a one-ounce bar's. Gram bars are useful as gifts, for trying out gold ownership, or as small trading units. They're a costly way to build up weight.
The same pattern runs through every product. Fractional coins cost more per gram than one-ounce coins, and one-ounce bars cost more per gram than kilo bars. When you compare prices, divide the total price by the grams of pure gold you're getting, and compare that number, not the sticker price.
The selling side works the other way. When you sell small amounts of jewelry, buyers deduct for testing, refining and their margin, so you receive less than $137.96 for each gram of pure gold inside. Our scrap gold calculator shows the ceiling, and what different kinds of buyers typically pay against it.
What common gold items typically weigh
Weights vary widely by design, so treat these as rough ranges. They're useful for a quick sense check before you weigh the real thing:
| Item | Typical weight |
|---|---|
| Stud earrings (pair, without backs) | 1–3 g |
| Women's plain wedding band | 2–5 g |
| Men's plain wedding band | 5–10 g |
| Class ring | 8–20 g |
| Fine chain (18–20 inch) | 3–10 g |
| Heavy rope or Cuban chain | 25–100 g+ |
| Tennis or link bracelet | 10–30 g |
Two warnings. Hollow chains look heavy but can weigh a fraction of a solid chain of the same size. Stones, pearls and steel parts add weight that isn't gold. Weigh what you actually have, and subtract anything that isn't gold before you multiply.
Worked examples
1. A 14k wedding band weighing 5 grams. 5 g × 58.3% gold = 2.92 g of pure gold. At $137.96/g, the gold is worth $402.38. That's melt value, the ceiling a scrap buyer works down from, not an offer.
2. An 18k chain weighing 20 grams. 20 g × 75% = 15 g of pure gold, worth $2,069.38. If the clasp is a different metal, weigh the chain without it.
3. A 10-gram bar of .9999 gold. 10 g × 99.99% = 9.999 g, worth $1,379.45 at spot. A dealer will charge a premium above that.

FAQ
How is the gold price per gram calculated?
Take the spot price per troy ounce and divide by 31.1035, the number of grams in a troy ounce. Today that's $4,291.00 ÷ 31.1035 = $137.96.
Is the per-gram price for pure gold?
Yes, for 24-karat gold. For jewelry, use the karat table above, or multiply by the karat divided by 24.
Why does a jeweler quote a different price per gram?
A jeweler selling you gold adds craftsmanship, design and retail margin. A buyer purchasing your gold subtracts testing and refining costs. Neither is the spot price, and both start from it.
How accurate does my scale need to be?
For jewelry, a digital scale reading to 0.01 g is sufficient. Kitchen scales that read in whole grams can be off by a few percent on small items, and at gold prices that's real money.
Does a gram of gold weigh the same in every country?
Yes. A gram is a gram. What varies is the purity sold as standard: 22k is common in South Asia and the Gulf, 18k in Europe, and 14k in the US.
