18k: the fine-jewelry and watchmaking standard

In the US, 14k is the everyday karat and 18k is the step up. Across much of Western and Southern Europe it's the other way around: 18k is the norm for fine jewelry, and Italian and French goldsmithing especially are built around it. Nearly every luxury jewelry house, and the prestige Swiss watch brands that make solid-gold cases, work in 18k.

Three reasons explain its position:

It looks like gold. At 75% gold, yellow 18k has the deep, saturated color people picture when they think of gold jewelry, noticeably richer than 14k when the two sit side by side.

It's hypoallergenic for most people. With only a quarter alloy, and typically no nickel in quality yellow and rose alloys, 18k is the karat recommended for sensitive skin.

It signals value. Higher gold content means higher intrinsic worth per gram, and luxury buyers expect it. A gold watch case or a designer bracelet in 14k would feel like a compromise at that price level.

The trade-off is softness. 18k scratches and bends more easily than 14k. Thin rings wear faster, and prongs holding a valuable stone need checking more often. Watchmakers and jewelers partly offset this with specific alloy recipes and heavier construction. That's one reason 18k pieces often weigh more than you'd expect.

The 750 hallmark and how 18k gets its colors

Marks. 18k is stamped 18K, 18KT or 750 (75.0% gold in parts per thousand). European and Swiss pieces use 750, often with an assay-office or maker's mark alongside. In countries with independent assay offices, such as the UK and France, the 750 mark is backed by official testing, which makes it more reliable than a manufacturer's own stamp.

Colors. All 18k contains 75% gold. The remaining 25% decides the color:

• Yellow: silver and copper in roughly balanced amounts.
• Rose or pink: more copper. Some watch brands use proprietary rose alloys with a little platinum or palladium to slow fading.
• White: palladium or nickel whiten the alloy, usually finished with rhodium plating. Because gold is yellow, 18k white can't be fully white without plating, and the rhodium eventually needs renewing.
• Green: a higher silver content gives a subtle greenish tint, used occasionally in design work.

Color doesn't affect melt value. Every one of these contains the same 75% gold.

Testing. Buyers use 18k acid on a touchstone or an XRF analyzer. Because 18k is soft, a genuine piece takes a filed test notch easily. A piece that resists filing, or shows a different color under the surface, may be plated.

When 18k is worth more than its gold

Of all the karats, 18k is the one most likely to be worth more as an object than as metal. Before you sell 18k by weight, check for:

• Signed designer pieces: jewelry from major houses often sells for well above melt on the resale market, especially with boxes and paperwork.
• Luxury watches: a solid 18k watch from a major Swiss brand is valued as a watch, sometimes many times its gold content. Never sell one for scrap without a watch-specific appraisal.
• Antique and estate jewelry: period craftsmanship and original stones can carry collector value.

For plain, unbranded or damaged 18k, melt value is the right frame.

What's actually gold in an 18k watch

A "solid 18k gold watch" isn't all gold, and the difference matters if it ever gets valued as metal:

• The movement, crystal, dial and hands are not gold. The movement in particular is steel and brass.
• Bracelet pins, spring bars and clasp springs are usually steel.
• Hollow or folded links, common on older bracelets, weigh much less than solid links of the same size.
• Two-tone watches combine steel with gold parts. Only the gold parts count.
• "Gold capped", "gold filled" or "18k plated" cases carry a thin layer of gold over base metal and are worth very little as scrap.

A jeweler or watchmaker can separate gold components from the rest before anything is weighed.

Worked examples

1. An 8-gram 18k signet ring. 8 g × 75% = 6.0 g of gold, worth $827.75.

2. A 15-gram 18k necklace. 15 g × 75% = 11.25 g of gold, worth $1,552.04.

3. A 35-gram solid 18k watch case (movement removed). 35 g × 75% = 26.25 g of gold, worth $3,621.42 as metal. As noted above, that's a floor for a branded watch, not its value.
