The first US coin in pure gold

For most of its history the US Mint struck gold coins in alloys: .900 fine before 1933, and 22 karat for the Gold Eagle from 1986. By the 2000s, buyers who wanted pure gold were turning to Canada's .9999 Maple Leaf and other foreign coins. Congress responded with the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, which also authorized a one-ounce, 24-karat gold bullion coin. The American Buffalo was released in 2006.

The design is a century old. The Buffalo reproduces James Earle Fraser's design for the 1913 Buffalo nickel, one of the most loved coin designs in American history:

  • Obverse: the profile of a Native American man, a composite Fraser based on several sitters.
  • Reverse: an American bison standing on a mound, often said to be modeled on "Black Diamond", a bison at New York's Central Park Zoo.

The nickel's small "FIVE CENTS" became "$50" and "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD" on the gold coin, but the art is otherwise faithful. The coin is sometimes called the "Gold Buffalo" or "Buffalo Gold" to distinguish it from the nickel.

Fractional Buffalos were issued only in 2008, in half, quarter and tenth-ounce sizes, and those are scarce today. The standard bullion Buffalo is one-ounce only.

Buffalo vs Eagle: which one?

Both are US Mint coins containing exactly one troy ounce of gold, and both are legal tender with a $50 face value. The differences:

For melt value, there's no difference. The Buffalo's premium over spot is often a little higher than the Eagle's, reflecting smaller production and demand for pure gold. Some buyers prefer the Buffalo because many international buyers trust .9999 gold. Others prefer the Eagle's toughness and fractional sizes. Both are among the most liquid gold coins in the US market.

Where the Buffalo sits in US gold history

The Buffalo is the latest chapter in a long, uneven story:

  • 1795–1933: the US strikes circulating gold coins, at 22 karat (.9167) until 1834 and at .900 fine from 1837, including the $20 Double Eagle.
  • 1933–1974: private gold ownership is largely prohibited after the Gold Recall. Gold coinage stops.
  • 1975: Americans can own gold again, but the US has no bullion coin of its own. Buyers use Krugerrands and Maple Leafs.
  • 1986: the 22k American Gold Eagle launches.
  • 2006: the 24k Buffalo gives US buyers a domestic pure-gold coin for the first time.
  • 2007–2016: the same law also produced the First Spouse series of half-ounce .9999 gold coins honoring presidents' spouses. These are collector coins, sold mostly at a premium.

How to identify a genuine Gold Buffalo, and care for it

  • Weight: 31.108 g. Diameter: 32.7 mm. Thickness: 2.95 mm.
  • Inscriptions: "LIBERTY" and the date on the obverse, with Fraser's initial "F" below the date. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "IN GOD WE TRUST", "$50" and "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD" on the reverse.
  • Color: a bright, pure-gold yellow.
  • Handling: 24k gold is soft. Hold Buffalos by the edges, keep them in capsules or the mint tube, and never stack them loose. Scratches and rim dings can lower what a dealer offers for an otherwise bullion coin.

Proof and uncirculated Buffalos with a "W" mint mark are collector products. Price and sell them as collectibles, not strictly by weight.

Melt value vs premium, and IRAs

The Gold Buffalo is IRA-eligible. It meets the .995 purity standard for gold held in a self-directed IRA through an approved custodian and depository. Dealers buy Buffalos readily, usually close to spot for bullion coins in good condition. See how to buy gold bullion for IRA basics.

Selling Gold Buffalos?

The figure above is melt value, which is the ceiling, not an offer, for bullion Buffalos. Undamaged one-ounce coins usually sell near it; 2008 fractionals and proofs may be worth more. Get more than one bid.

FAQ

How much is a Gold Buffalo worth?

$4,291.00 in gold content as of September 23, 2026. Market prices sit slightly above for buyers and near it for sellers.

Is the Gold Buffalo pure gold?

Yes. It's .9999 fine, 24-karat gold, the first US Mint coin at that purity.

Is a Gold Buffalo worth more than a Gold Eagle?

The gold content is identical. The Buffalo often costs a little more to buy because of higher premiums.

Are there half-ounce Gold Buffalos?

Only from 2008, when the Mint issued half, quarter and tenth-ounce Buffalos for one year.

Why does the Gold Buffalo look like the old nickel?

It deliberately reproduces James Earle Fraser's 1913 Buffalo nickel design.

What's the difference between a bullion Buffalo and a proof Buffalo?

A bullion Buffalo is sold through dealers at a small premium over its gold. A proof Buffalo is sold by the Mint directly to collectors, with a mirror finish, a "W" mint mark and a presentation box, at a much higher price. Both contain one ounce of .9999 gold.
